“WHAA?!” The rhythmic clanger from the anvil yard filled half the hold with its ragged music, and in its midst, she went, as much at home as any of them. Her father’s grumbling voice was hard to make out from where he stood at the great anvil, instructing the work all around. She knew without asking, Jorl was falling behind again, and she was to take a turn at with the big hammers. It was hard to keep up the rhythm, but harder still when each swing and thud was so closely followed by another’s and then once more before you swung again, and thud and clang and again. She was named for the heart of fire, and she loved the old powers of it, the magic wrought of flame.
