Heroyam Slava.
Glory to the Heroes.
There has been no shortage of these in Ukraine. Heroes martial. Heroes political. Heroes societal and communal. For many, it has been a nearly decade-long struggle, one that the rest of us failed to see before it was nearly too late. Over the last year and change, our eyes have been opened and among the great many acts of resilience and sacrifice, one quality in particular has left a deep and lasting impact;
Their unrelenting optimism.
To be willing to recognize a dark predicament for what it is. To face such a situation with the grim pride that has spattered history with no shortage of gore. This alone would be cause for much respect. But to bring a good-humored, caring, and clever breed of stubbornness into such despair, to defy the doubts of foe and friend alike and say “Here I stand, on my convictions and on my land. I will not move. I will fight. I can do no other.” with a grin that defies the reaper and the trundling Russian dreadnought alike, this inspires awe in mere mortals such as I.
We will see Ukraine free and victorious, of this I have little doubt. But between here and there lay the dark lands of doubt and fear, and not for the last time will I feel sick and saddened as the butcher reaps his bloody bill. And still, the struggle continues. Until the last invader has been driven across the frontier. Until all of Ukraine is free of the Russian yoke. Until this remorseless foe has been made to repent and repair.
Until then. And beyond.
